THE APARTMENT HOUSE BY FORMWERKZ ARCHITECTS

Formwerkz Architects designed the KUSH  “Apartment House” in Seletar Close, Singapore.

Formwerkz Architects, founded in 1998 by three men in Singapore, were commissioned to design a kush home for twelve people.  The firm, which is only made up of 15 people (maximum) at a time were up for a challenge – how were they going to accommodate the needs of people spanning three generations?  TheCoolList.com put it succinctly in their post, noting that Formwerkz had to “provide engaging, communal spaces as well as privacy for each individual within.” The result is two large structures connected by a sky bridge.  The home is comprised of several multi-purpose rooms, including: work spaces, recreational areas, personal rooms, and engaging spaces for the entire family – all on multiple levels.

Formwerkz Architects met with each of the twelve people who were slated to live in this kush house.  Formwerkz asked them what they envisioned the final product to like, and what their individual needs were.  One common element that Formwerkz discovered was swimming, so a pool was created at the base of the structure.  The Architects decided to use the pool as a way to join the two structures; it also acts as a point of leisure engagement for the families to come together.

Atop the parents’ wing of the house is a rooftop garden, accessible by a sky bridge that extends from the area where the younger brood reside.  We don’t know that we could have done it, but Formwerkz managed to make the best of their design limitations, and squeezed in as many unique kush features as possible into this great building.
